Windows 2000 Professional is an operating system whose time has passed.  Still, many people have this system running on their older computers, and certain errors are likely to be plaguing them.  The truth is that every operating system has its own unique character and Windows 2000 was no exception.

Newer systems like Windows Vista have been on the market for a couple of years.  Many people don’t find the extra features worth the trouble that comes along.  Vista turned out to be one of Microsoft’s most finicky operating systems.

Although Windows Vista has been known to be difficult to adapt to, word on the street is that the latest operating system Windows is making, due to be released in late in 2009 or early 2010 is much more user friendly.  For now, let’s try to keep your current system running.

Errors when you Add/Remove a Program
You try to add or remove a program and mshta.exe generates an error and is automatically closed by Windows.  This will require you to restart your program and read the error log.  You will continue to see this error if you don’t address it at the command prompt.

When you get the control prompt after rebooting type:

• sfc /purgecache
• sfc /scannow

If this fails to clean up the difficulty than odds are the problem is somewhere within the registry.  Believe me, you don’t want to play around in there.  Deleting the wrong file or correcting it improperly can cause a system wide shut down.

Problems running Both Windows 2000 and Windows XP
Some people opt to run two different operating systems on one machine in order to achieve different tasks.  If you encounter odd responses and freezing, make sure that your two systems have been placed in different partitions of the hard drive.  This should fix the problem.

Your CPU is always Busy

This problem is most common if you are running two operating systems on one machine, as described above.  There are motherboards that are more prone to the problem, ASUS P2B-D, ASUS P2B-DS, ASUS XG-DLS, ASUS P2L97-D and ASUS P2L97-DS.  If you have one of these motherboards contact ASUS and request a motherboard that enables ACPI support.
