The Best Way to Conduct a Windows XP Repair

September 25th, 2009 by admin | Filed in Windows Operating System

It is a nasty problem when your operating system collapses.  The best way to deal with a Windows XP repair can be a complete reinstallation of the system.  Before you start a reinstall, I strongly urge you to back up any data you have on your hard disk to alternate media.  CDs, external drives, and flash memory are great places to store your important documents, pictures, and music before you muck around with your operating system.

Built in Repairs for Windows
Windows XP comes with a built in repair function.  You will, however, need to have an installation CD to activate the routine.  You should have received this CD when you purchased your computer, and hopefully you still know where it is.

Getting Started After the Back Up
After backing up your data, reboot the computer with the recovery CD installed.  A prompt will ask you to press any key to boot from the CD.  Go ahead and press a key.  Your screen will turn blue and the computer will begin to load Windows XP Setup from the provided CD.

When the files have completed loading, you will be asked if you wish to set up Windows XP.  You want to be careful not to enter the recovery console here, rather go ahead and select “To set up Windows XP now, press Enter.”  Your next step is to agree to the EULA.

To Repair or Replace Windows XP?

If Windows Setup can find a copy of Windows XP on your drive, it will offer you the option of repair rather than replace.  If your copy of XP is too corrupted, you will only have the option of replacing the operating system.  Remember, if you have to re-install the entire system, you will lose all your data.  Aren’t you glad you backed it all up?  (You did back it up, right?)

Almost Finished with the Windows Re-Install
Even if you ask for a repair, it will appears as if Windows is re-installing itself.  Wait it out, it isn’t resetting any of your settings or erasing your data.  Stay near by or at least check on it periodically, in case it requests your CD key.

When the installation is complete, reactivate your security features.  You don’t want to go online until you are protected again or you will be very vulnerable.  Head to Microsoft and download any updates applicable to Windows XP.

Another Option in Computer Maintenance
If all this seems like a lot of work and you want to try out something simpler first, read more about a good registry cleanerRegistry cleaners can tidy up the registry, an operating system’s organizational subsystem, and help a computer run faster and better.  With either solution, your computer should be much healthier, and that is a good thing.
