There are two common forms of buffer underrun that you may encounter during typical computer use. The first involves data being streamed to your computer at too slow a speed, causing lapses and gaps while you are watching or listening to something.

What sometimes happens, especially when you record while downloading, is that the amount of data available for the recording device runs out. If you are burning a CD while downloading it, that means you are left with a shiny coaster. It is frustrating, but simple to solve. You have three options.
Your primary choice is to simply wait until you have fully transferred the data onto your hard drive before you try to put it on a CD. This means that you have to wait until one function completes before staring another one, something that seems rather difficult to do in our multitasking culture. Still, it is a very effective solution.
The other choice is to burn at a much lower speed than that of the recording function. If you have enough material loaded, and it is loading faster than it is burning to disk, you should be ok. Again, this slows you down, but is better than ending up with a useless CD.
The third choice is to download and apply buffer underrun protection. There are several programs that can be used and they allow the writing laser to stop where it is when the data runs out and then restart. The gaps between writes are usually very small.
