There are two common forms of buffer underrun that you may encounter during typical computer use.  The first involves data being streamed to your computer at too slow a speed, causing lapses and gaps while you are watching or listening to something.

The other kind of underrun occurs when you are moving data to a CD or DVD at a speed that is higher than the current settings can accommodate.

If you have a 10 bit buffer and are running 1 bit per second your buffer is only 10 seconds.  If you move it up to 30 bits, you will have 30 seconds.  This allows your computer to download more data and present it before the buffer runs out.

The catch is that if you want to set a larger buffe,r you have to commit a larger portion of your computer’s resources to buffering.  If the buffer is set for 60 bits, but has only accumulated 20 bits, it will underrun sooner.

When this happens you will be left watching a frozen image or hear your music stop; annoying, but not a major issue, unless you are recording.

Underruns While Recording

What sometimes happens, especially when you record while downloading, is that the amount of data available for the recording device runs out.  If you are burning a CD while downloading it, that means you are left with a shiny coaster.  It is frustrating, but simple to solve.  You have three options.

Your primary choice is to simply wait until you have fully transferred the data onto your hard drive before you try to put it on a CD.  This means that you have to wait until one function completes before staring another one, something that seems rather difficult to do in our multitasking culture.   Still, it is a very effective solution.

The other choice is to burn at a much lower speed than that of the recording function.  If you have enough material loaded, and it is loading faster than it is burning to disk, you should be ok.  Again, this slows you down, but is better than ending up with a useless CD.

The third choice is to download and apply buffer underrun protection.  There are several programs that can be used and they allow the writing laser to stop where it is when the data runs out and then restart.  The gaps between writes are usually very small.
