Why Windows will Always Stink
In my technology consulting business, I use a lot of different operating systems. Some people have called me a "Linux fanboy" because I am, in fact, a big fan of Linux. The thing is, I have darn good reason to be a big fan of Linux: It’s better in almost every way.
I don’t make this statement lightly, and I know that Windows has improved somewhat in recent years. Here’s a list of my reasons, though:
- Cost — Linux is free, and the thousands of software packages available for it are mostly free. A lot of people mistakenly think Windows is free because it "came with the computer." It’s not free — the manufacturer builds that cost into the price.
- Flexibility — There are as many Linux configurations as there are Linux users. You can make Linux look and feel however you want. You can even make it look like Windows! Google "linux screenshots" if you don’t believe me. Additionally, because of the compartmentalized nature of Unix, you can optimize your computer to perform specific tasks like web serving, office productivity, or audio engineering. I have one computer that is dedicated to sound. Every bit of processing power is devoted to that, and it’s awesome.
- Power — One of the things that turns people off to Linux is the intimidation factor. People don’t like command lines. Well, let me just tell you that once you get a taste of some of the things you can do from the Linux terminal, you will never want to go back to commercial software. Linux makes it easy to back up your files regularly. It makes it easy to see where your website visitors are coming from. It makes it easy to see who is trying to access your computer — and block them.
- Ease of Use — Yeah, I just said that. It is true that configuring a Linux box and getting everything to work can be pretty complicated (but not necessarily). But once it is set up, you never have to think about it again. It will just run and run and run for years without ever slowing down or throwing up. My 86-year-old grandmother used Linux for years. Now she has a Mac.
- Freedom — You can choose from a zillion distros, and you never have to register. You also have access to the source code of all your applications. If you’re a hardcore programmer, you can custom tailor every aspect of Linux. You wouldn’t buy a car whose hood was welded shut. Why would you buy a computer whose hood is welded shut.
All that being said, the reality of the situation is that everyone needs to use Windows. Some commercial programs are ubiquitous, and in some realms (like video editing) the open-source community has just not gotten its stuff together yet. That might be the stinkiest thing about Windows — we’re forced to use it. Oh well. Nobody ever said life was fair, and if they did, they were wrong.
